Acer griseum Paper Bark Maple Slow growing to 30' tall. Exfoliating, cinnamon-brown bark peels in thin sheets to provide a very attractive and strong ornamental presence. Autumn foliage can be a pronounced red, but frequently is green with red overtones on exposed leaf surfaces. It is the last of the trifoliate maples to color. Zone 4 Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ Red Japanese Maple Finely divided lacy deep red leaves of spring fade to light green in early summer and take on a beautiful golden, orange or red color in autumn. A small, deciduous tree reaching 15'-25', ‘Atropurpureum’ has delicate, upright branches and forms a beautiful vase shaped specimen tree. Sculptural multiple trunks show nicely when lit up at night from beneath the canopy. Zone 5 Acer palmatum Green Japanese Maple Grows 15'-25' with muscular looking trunks. Like ‘atropurpureum’, looks stunning when lit at night, and is grown for its interesting growth habit and fine leaf texture. Fall color ranges from bright yellow through orange and red. Striking, even when grown in full shade. Zone 5 Acer platanoides Norway Maple Medium to large shade tree grows 40'-60' tall, but can reach up to 90', often growing wider than tall when open grown. Showy in early spring with numerous yellow-green flowers against grayish-black ridged bark. Colors uniformly yellow in late autumn. Zone 3 Acer saccharum Sugar Maple Grows to 50' tall with reliable fall color ranging from yellow to red with strong growth habit and good toleration of tough environmental conditions. Zone 3 Carpinus betulus European Hornbeam Pyramidal shaped shade tree with dense foliage grows 40'-60' tall. Smooth fluted steel-gray bark creates ornamental interest. Works well in large planter boxes, lawns and urban plaza plantings. Zone 5 Crataegus monogyna Single Seed Hawthorn Widely known as the May-tree, Hawthorn is the only British plant to be named after the month in which it flowers. Most typically thought of as a hedgerow shrub, its thorns form an excellent barrier to animals. When left isolated and uncut they will develop into strong trees with dense crowns. Bark is grey to brown with regular fissures that reveal a handsome orange layer underneath. Flowers—often white with a cool pink cast—mark the cusp between spring and summer and are followed by bright red berries. Zone 4 Crataegus phaenopyrum Washington Hawthorn A slow to medium specimen or border tree, matures to 20'. Upright and oval initially, this Hawthorn spreads and rounds to an arching mound with age. Multi-trunked, densely branched, and full of thorns, it works well in urban environments and provides habitat for wildlife. Colors in late autumn to a deep red-wine color. Zone 3 Fagus sylvatica European Beech Grows 50' to 60' tall and up to 50' wide in a broad pyramidal shape. A short trunk means branches generally touch the ground. Autumn foliage is very attractive, with leaves often persisting through winter. Zone 4 Gleditsia triancanthos inermis Thornless Common Honey Locust This shade, specimen, massing or street tree grows 30' to 70' feet. Bright green, lacy foliage gives a loose, open shade ideal for patios and shade loving plants. In autumn, the small leaflets turn yellow and filter into the grass as they fall, requiring little raking. Zone 4 Koelreuteria paniculata Goldenrain Tree This moderate grower will reach 50' tall and should be planted in full sun. Tolerates a variety of soil conditions, but should be given extra water during hot spells. This showy tree is ideal for yards and landscapes. Zones 5 Malus Sprout Free® * See Apple Rootstock Platanus x acerifolia ‘Bloodgood’ Planetree Shade and specimen plant, reaching up to 100'.
